Throughout history, grey was often associated with the poor, for the poor could not afford to wear any color but the grey of undyed wool. By the twentieth century, with the rise of the machine and the International Style, grey had become synonymous with modernity, industrialization, and mass culture. Grey represents conformity, emotional detachment, and the lack of character.

Grey is the starting point of my degree project (2015-). It is a brooch made out of carved duct tape and resin composite. It was an experiment to push the limit of the materials and to create a piece that evokes elegance and character, reversing the traditional associations of grey with boredom and conformity. I sought to elevate the values of the color and the material through laborious handwork, craftsmanship, and a visual language reminiscent of Berlin Iron ornaments.
